Michael P. Gulizio
A prosthodontist who has spent more than two decades rebuilding mouths in New York City, and an equal number of years asking what the mouth is saying about the rest of the body.

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty responsible for rebuilding the mouth as a functioning whole: teeth, bite, jaw joints and the structures that support them.
Dr. Gulizio has practiced it for more than twenty years, treating patients whose needs are restorative, esthetic and functional at the same time, with expertise spanning porcelain veneers, implant restorations, full-mouth rehabilitation and occlusal management.
Patients often come to him when earlier dental work has failed, when esthetic goals have to be balanced against how the bite and joints actually function, or when treatment demands a higher level of planning and execution. His clinical philosophy rests on three things: precision diagnosis, biomechanical stability and long-term predictability. Dental work, in his view, has to look right, function comfortably and endure.
Born in Brooklyn, he completed his undergraduate training at the University of Florida. He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine and a Master of Science in Education at the University of Pennsylvania, then completed his Certificate in Prosthodontics and a Master of Science in Dental Sciences at the University of Connecticut before returning to New York to practice.
For several years he served as Program Director of the Advanced Esthetics and Occlusion Program at New York University, training practicing dentists from around the world in porcelain veneer diagnosis, smile design integrated with occlusion, functional esthetics and advanced restorative treatment planning.
In 2007 he co-founded Core Smiles Aesthetic & Implant Dentistry with Dr. Steven Cordoves. Based in NoMad, Manhattan, the practice covers the full scope of dentistry, from preventive care through esthetics, implants, TMJ and airway care, to longevity-focused work.
That work led directly to the book. Over two decades in the chair, the same pattern kept returning: the information that explained a patient's problem often sat outside the frame the dental visit was built to examine, in how they breathed, how they slept, what lived in their saliva and how inflammation moved through the rest of the body. Oral Intelligence is his account of that frame, and of what happens when it is widened.
